Foggy Beach Pictures | Family Photos at Half Moon Bay

Family Photos at Half Moon Bay

This photoshoot almost didn't happen. We showed up and it was the thickest fog I've seen yet on the coast. I told her, well since we are here, -- we might as well try and see what happens!

So thankful we did!

Shooting in Fog at Half Moon Bay

Shooting in fog has advantages and disadvantages. In some ways, it can be easier because the fog is a giant softbox that softens the light coming in. In some ways it can be harder because photographers really have to clean up the photos afterwards in post-processing to make sure the colors and clarity are vibrant and sharp. While fog is harmless to the camera, mist is not. Photographers have to be mindful of moisture around the lens as well.

Half Moon Bay at the Ritz Carlton

There are many beaches to choose from in the SF Bay Area. Of course, in my experience, not all beaches are created equal when it comes to family photos!

Some beaches have harsh, dark sand, dirty shorelines with seaweed, seasonal closures, difficult parking, or a long hiking distance to reach the beach.

Half Moon Bay by the Ritz Carlton has a public beach associated with it and beautiful views along the golf course. It is a panoramic location for a casual stroll. One con of this location is that the parking lot only features about 10 spots for the public. We arrived early to secure a spot and then walked down the paved walkway to reach the beach.

The reason we chose this particular beach is because it allows dogs! This family brought their sweet dark goldendoodle to the photoshoot, because dogs are family members too! I am a huge dog lover and love including dogs in photos; however, only a certain number of my photography locations allow pets, so we have to be mindful of that when choosing locations.

Dressing for Beach Family Photos

When I shared these photos online, I got soooo many positive compliments about the colors, and specifically many people had wonderful things to say about this mama’s dress! This color red really popped in the gallery and brought the gallery to life. This gallery wouldn’t look quite the same if she was wearing a navy or forest green dress. Her warm, vibrant, flowing dress was the perfect pop of color.
Dad and son looked great as well. I generally recommend men wear khakis and a solid button down, which is classic and timeless. Their son’s neutral white shirt with the cute suspenders and bowtie were a perfect outfit for his first family photos.
